The Wells Petroglyph Preserve

The Wells Petroglyph Preserve was created in 2007 when Katherine Wells donated 156 acres on Mesa Prieta to The Archaeological Conservancy. Katherine purchased the petroglyph- rich land on the mesa in 1992.  She had the vision for a preservation and educational effort for Mesa Prieta and the determination to develop a program dedicated to its protection. Even now, after her land has been given to The Archaeological Conservancy, Katherine continues to envision and work towards further endeavors to protect the mesa.
Today the Wells Petroglyph Preserve, overseen by The Archaeological Conservancy and managed by the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project, is made available to the public by docent-led tours and in various other ways, including special fund-raising events.  For information about tours on the Wells Petroglyph Preserve and other associated activities, please see related links on
this web page.

In December, 2014, an additional 25 acres were added to the Wells Petroglyph Preserve by The Archaeological Conservancy, bringing the total acreage to 181 acres.  Please see: MORE

Special Fundraising Tours
For the last several years, special fund-raising tours have been held on the
Wells Petroglyph Preserve.  These tours, offered to a small number of people, include special amenities such as a gourmet lunch, token gifts and special attention from the staff and volunteers of the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project.  The most popular of these tours is the Flute Player Tour held in the fall at Katherine Wells' home above the Rio Grande.
Please see 2017 Flute Player Tour
