2010 Volunteer Recognition
Suzie Frazier became MPPP Project Coordinator in July, 2006 and assumed the duties of running all of its activities. She coordinated volunteers and garnered grants from the LANL Foundation, Santa Fe Community Foundation, the Sulica Fund and many private foundations. She organized and ran the Summer Youth Intern Program and coordinated the School Curriculum Program. Among her other accomplishments were: the initial development of the GIS database, now nearing implementation; the organization of Petroglyph Platicas, a popular lecture forum; the coordination of docent tours on the Wells Petroglyph Preserve; and the coordination of recording teams on the mesa. Suzie volunteered her time and expertise in petroglyph survey and recording in many areas on Mesa Prieta, participated in public presentations and educational events and initiated the MPPP library effort. Late in 2010, Suzie stepped down from her duties with the project to devote more time to her family. We wish her well and thank her for all she has done! |

Dr. Richard (Dick) Ford has been involved with the project since the very beginning and has assisted in countless ways. He has participated annually with the Summer Youth Intern Program where he mentored students and provided leadership in the field. Dick is involved with all petroglyph recording efforts on Mesa Prieta and painstakingly researches the documented recording to write land owner reports for each of the completed and ongoing parcels of land. He is particularly interested in the Cultural Landscape features being documented on the mesa to determine the lifestyles of many thousands of years of human use in the area. Dick has participated in and presented at the Pláticas programs given during the winter months. A true friend of the project, Dr. Ford has aided the project financially on many occasions and freely shares his unlimited expertise at every opportunity. |
Kathy and Don Fiero and Bob Greene are named Volunteer Team of the Year after many years of working on Mesa Prieta. Their nomination commended their work as petroglyph recorders since 2003 on Mesa Prieta on the Salazar land, Wells Petroglyph Preserve and now Richard Cook’s land. Their recording documents and photos are well drawn, clear, neat, accurate and a credit to the archival record being amassed. They have consistently supported and served as docents for the Wells Petroglyph Preserve tour program for schools, public and private groups and others. The qualifications for Volunteer of the Year are: Preservation Ethic, Leadership, Commitment to MPPP, Quality of Work and Community Service. Kathy, Don and Bob are leaders in all of these aspects and richly deserve the honor of being the MPPP Volunteer Team of 2010! |

Damian Turner joined MPPP in 2009 and, in the fall, participated in an introduction to petroglyph recording class prior to taking the spring 2010 training. He recorded regularly with two teams, was a member of a petroglyph survey team, participated in trail work on Wells Petroglyph Preserve and served as a Site Steward. Damian was a member of the MPPP Petroglyph Committee and was instrumental in the installation of the fine new outhouse on the Preserve. He also worked with MPPP to provide photographic work for the Adopt A Petroglyph program, designed and build custom book cases for the library and worked in the Vecinos office doing data entry. Damian just pitches in whereever help is needed. |
