​ In 2024, we celebrated 25 years as a non-profit, archaeological organization.  Our work continues as we strive to bring protection to Mesa Prieta.

The Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project is a project to protect a place.

MPPP is exclusively organized for charitable and educational purposes, including the protection and preservation of archaeological features and the environment and cultural landscape of the Mesa Prieta region of the northern Rio Grande Valley through documentation, education, outreach and promotion of heritage stewardship.

"Mesa Verde through the Backdoor"​
Kathy Fiero was archaeologist at Mesa Verde National Park for 20 years, and is the author of numerous books, including Dirt, Water, Stone, A Century of Preserving Mesa Verde; and Balcony House: A History of a Cliff Dwelling, Mesa Verde National Park-Colorado.  She's also been one of MPPP's longtime recording volunteers.  This is a unique opportunity to understand Mesa Verde from a perspective regular visitors don't often see.

"Religious Iconography in Contemporary Nahua Pilgrimage” 
Our talk will present colorful visuals of public rituals held as part of pilgrimages to sacred mountains
organized by Nahua people living on the Huasteca Veracruzana region of Gulf Coast Mexico.
Drawing on our University Press of Colorado book Pilgrimage to Broken Mountain, we will focus
on the iconography of the anthropomorphic cut-paper figures produced by the thousands
for each ritual offering. In addition, we will discuss core myths, chanting, and altar design, showing
​that Nahua religion is pantheistic and based upon a monist philosophy.
