MPPP - Dedicated to Education

In 1999, Katherine Wells, MPPP Founder, recognized that extended preservation of the archaeological treasures on Mesa Prieta and nearby areas would occur primarily through education  ̶  of the community and eventually across the state.

Today, the project hosts two major award-winning programs focused on area youth; the 4th -7th grade curriculum is taught in over a dozen area schools
and is offered free on-line.  The Summer Youth Intern Program just completed its 18th year and has impacted over 280 area youth in very positive ways.

The docent-led tour program on the Wells Petroglyph Preserve provides a major interface with the public for the Project.  Over 120 tours are given each year serving over 1200 adults and children.  Tour docents are well informed in heritage and site visitation ethics and pass that information along in the context of the tours.

The project presents Mesa Talks monthly lecture series.  Speakers present on topics related to Northern New Mexico that enhance our understanding of the use of Mesa Prieta.

MPPP staff and volunteers are an active presence at area conferences and activities.  As our Mission Statement emphasizes, protection and sustainment comes through education.

"MPPP documents, protects and sustains endangered
archaeological treasures in the northern Rio Grande Valley"
