The Wells Petroglyph Preserve is open for the 2025 touring season. 

Tours Information:
The 2025 touring season starts March 1st - November 22nd. Tours are offered with a volunteer docent as your guide. Each tour listed below will have a calendar of available days to choose from. Select the appropriate tour to learn more and book your tour today. 

The staff at MPPP and volunteer docents' express gratitude to all our
guests who toured with us this past year. Thank you for bringing your friends
and family to experience the mysterious petroglyphs. All your support helps
the project to continue our mission to record, preserve and to educate the public.

​Self-guided tours are not allowed on the preserve.


The Wells Petroglyph Preserve is private property at a protected location near Velarde, NM. After booking your tour, you will be sent a confirmation email with an attached map to this location.

Tours on the Wells Petroglyph Preserve

General Information about all tours:

Please follow the official instructions attached to the confirmation email to navigate to our trailhead. We advise downloading and printing prior to departure.

Our office is open Tuesday through Friday between the hours of 10 -3pm; actual hours vary as we may be out leading a tour. Correspondence occurs best via email. If you have any trouble while booking your tour please contact us at [email protected].

We lead tours in small groups of approximately 6 people.

Self-guided tours are not permitted.

Tours start times are indicated in the reservation process; however, you may choose your desired start time. Simply write in your desired time in the comment field when you book your tour. Tour duration is approximately for 2 hours. 

We recommend arriving 15 minutes early to prepare for hiking. Please be prompt. Tours leave the parking area at the designated start time.

​PLEASE NOTE - failure to arrive at the time indicated on your reservation may lead to tour cancellation. 

Children under 10 are not permitted.

Pets are not permitted; service dogs are allowed.

Bring a hat, water, sunscreen, a walking stick if desired, and boots or sturdy shoes. Binoculars come in handy! Be aware that tours cover steep and sometimes rugged terrain.

Photography is allowed for personal enjoyment only. Commercial photography is prohibited.

No tours are scheduled Sundays or Mondays. Tours are not scheduled on the following holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day following and Christmas or the day following.

Please be advised that once Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project has confirmed your tour reservation - your tour fee is non-refundable. Occasionally tours are rescheduled for unavoidable reasons such as weather, safety, trail conditions, illness or other emergency needs. In the event of a cancellation, you will have two weeks to rebook a future tour. After that time, please consider your tour fee a donation to MPPP- we thank you!
